چکیده

The aim of this work is to apply the Gamma Ray Transmission (GRT), a non destructive technique, for structural characterization of ceramic samples. With this technique, the porosity of Alumina (Al2O3) and Boron Carbide (B4C) ceramic samples, in tablet format, was determined. The equipment employed is constituted by a 241 Am gamma ray source (59.6 keV and 100mCi), a 2”x2” diameter NaI (Tl) scintillation detector coupled to a standard gamma ray transmission electronic and a micrometric and automated table for sample movement. The porosity profile of the samples shows a homogeneous porosity distribution, within the spatial resolution of the employed transmission system. The mean porosity determined for Al2O3 and B4C were 17.8±1.3% and 3.87±0.43%, respectively. A statistical treatment of these results was performed and showed that the mean porosity values determinate by the GRT are the same as those supplied by the manufacturer.

Sintering of Ceramics

Sintering with low frequency rf power (-50 M H z ) is a new technique with unique capabilities that has been used to sinter a variety of ceramic materials, including zirconia-toughened alumina, alumina, silicon carbide, and boron carbide. Processing with low frequencies offers many advantages compared to processing with conventional microwave frequencies (915 MHz and 2.45 GHz). Because of the l...

Porosity Study of Synthetic Sandstones by Non-Destructive Nuclear Techniques

In this paper nuclear techniques were used to describe the structural characteristics of ceramic samples. These samples were produced mainly with silica to simulate sandstones. Three sets of samples with different characteristics were analyzed using gamma ray transmission to obtain point by point porosity and X-ray microtomography to obtain the porosity, for 2D sections and the scanned bulk, as...

Effect of Surface Roughness Morphology on Bond Strength of Thermal Sprayed WC-10Co-4Cr Ceramic/Metal Coating

In this study, the effect of surface roughness and roughness morphology on the bond strength of WC-Co-Cr coatings has investigated. The three different surfaces morphology are use for this purpose. The first and tow samples sandblasted with alumina and silicon carbide respectively. Other sample no sandblasted before spraying process. The same WC-10Co-4Cr coating deposited on the substrates with...
